In-flight internet - the latest craze

By: amarpreet97

Wouldn’t it be a delight to surf the internet while you are on-board and enjoying a cup of coffee? Now, you no more need to carry your laptop when you are on a business trip or a pleasure trip. For you can have an instant access to internet and check your mails and no need to worry about your family any more. With airlines such as Alaska airlines, Jetblue, American and Lufthansa airlines, the airlines industry is set to undergo a perfect makeover.

Alaska airlines has developed the in-flight services utilizing the latest state-of-the-art technology for the convenience of customers. The Wi-fi service is presently enabled in some of its buses and this service will be extended to it’s entire fleet within a span of one year. Using satellite technology offered by Eutelsat, the leading satellite operator, Lufthansa has come up with a new in-flight service which has been offered by the business unit of Boeing Company. This inflight service has been branded as Flynet and offers basic internet facilities like email, shopping and news update. One can also have a wholesome entertainment while in plane.

Lufthansa has made this service free of charge to the customers. What more a passenger would like to have? Economy as well as an opportunity to stay connected all the time.

American airlines provides this service in some of its flights currently but has got complete plans to extend online connectivity to it’s other flights too. Henceforth, with such kind of transformation in the airlines, the world for sure is going to experience a new high.

What are the benefits associated with in-flight internet:

•This kind of service is entirely new and so passengers are sure to get lured. Some of the people simply want to try out new things and even if they have to pay for this, they will. More so, if passengers can buy books and magazines for knowledge and entertainment when on-board, they can also pay for the internet.
•The next generation is entirely net-savvy and so this kind of facility I like a booster dose for them.
•The passengers like to stay tuned with their friends and relatives especially on-board. Also, the entrepreneurs and working people have the necessity of staying tuned to their office staff for professional reasons.

Even after all these arrangements, will this kind of facility will be sustainable is a big question.

So, what needs to be done?
•The airlines industry should have more bandwidth in order to have better connectivity.
•The basic facilities like email and instant messaging should atleast be available.
•The internet facility should be provided free of cost or either at subsidized rates to all passengers which currently is not. The airlines currently are on the plans to charge almost $10-$12/passenger.

If the airlines industry takes note of the above recommendations, no doubt that it will reap huge profits with the increase in the number of passengers as well as the additional income from each passenger on account of the extra facilities being provided to them.
